KY FOUNDERS SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Angelique Johnson

Dr. Angelique Johnson is the founder and CEO of Louisville-based MEMStim.

What does MEMStim do?

We develop custom nerve stimulator (Neurostimulation) electrodes for treating hearing loss, chronic pain, Parkinsons disease and more.

What sets MEMStim apart?

We leverage advanced manufacturing to make electrode leads that are minimally invasive, feature rich and low cost.

What was the greatest challenge you encountered in launching your startup and how did you overcome it?

We faced many challenges. It is hard to say which was the greatest, but translating a university technology into a clinical viable product is definitely up there.

What are you most proud of about MEMStim?

I am most proud that we have been able to create an innovative technology with the potential to save and enhance the lives of individuals all over the world.

What piece of advice do you have for new founders – or – what have you learned that you wish youd known when launching a startup?

Dont get caught up in what sounds sexy or exciting to everyone else. Focus on what your customers actually want, which may or may not be interesting to anyone outside of the market.

What is the most important ingredient or ingredients for a thriving startup ecosystem?

Equity is the most important ingredient to me. That means equal access opportunities, funding and consideration.

What makes Kentucky a great place to innovate?

There are a lot of high tech resources and facilities in KY that founders can leverage to create disruptive innovations.
